Madama Butterfly at the Royal Opera House
Florence Nightingale Museum
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is based on the true story of a young, geisha girl in Japan. Cio-Cio-San forsakes her religion and community, when she marries American Naval Officer Pinkerton. The young girl believes she is entering into a real, binding marriage, because she is hopelessly in love with Pinkerton, but he is not taking it seriously. Her romantic paradise is destroyed when her husband deserts her shortly after their marriage. Cio-Cio-San, so madly in love, continues to live with the hope that he will return to her, unaware that he has dissolved their marriage and married an American girl. Pinkerton returns to Japan 3 years later with his new wife, but not for the reason Cio-Cio-San believes – it is not to stay with her but to take their son and return to America. Feeling hopeless, Cio-Cio-San agrees, but arranges that Pinkerton himself must come and collect their son. The wonderful score includes Butterfly’s aria, ‘Un bel di, vedremo’ (one fine day) and the Humming Chorus. Puccini’s opera is captivating and ultimately heart-breaking with tragic consequences for the young geisha girl.
