The Occupation Tapestry

Samares Manor
The Jersey War Tunnels

Not quite British, but definitely not French, the unique little island of Jersey has influences of both. It is the largest of the Channel Islands, although it only measures five miles long and nine miles wide, and is nestled in the Channel just 14 miles off the French coast of Normandy. There are bonds with France going back around a thousand years, but in 1204 the Islanders chose to stay faithful to the English Crown and were granted self-governing privileges. Jersey has its own parliament and is actually one of the oldest assemblies in the Commonwealth. The currency on the island is predominantly Sterling, but Jersey also has its own currency, the Jersey Pound, and perhaps one of the only places you will see a pound note!

Jersey’s landscape has been shaped by the sea and this idyllic haven is home to historic castles, stunning unspoilt beaches, scenic coastal routes and dramatic cliff top panoramic views. It has one of the largest tides in the world and twice a day, at low tide, the island almost doubles in size exposing miles of extra sandy beach.

Jersey’s capital, St Helier, is a bustling harbour town with a tapestry of architectural styles that depict the story of the changes over time. This affluent town has a vibrant atmosphere with many streets carrying old French titles and some shop fronts still display the names of their island founders. The harbour and marina are always full of activity and a great place to spend time just sitting and watching the comings and goings of the boats.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Monday 13th May

You will be collected by your door-to-door car and taken to the Soffitel Hotel at Heathrow, where you will be greeted by your Tour Manager who will be with you throughout the holiday. Tea/coffee and pastries will be served and once the group is complete, the hotel porters will assist with taking our luggage to check-in. After checking-in, we will purchase lunch in the departure lounge to eat during our flight to Jersey. Upon arrival we will be met by our transfer coach and taken to the Atlantic Hotel. Your Tour Manager will assist with check-in and there will be time to settle in and enjoy the surroundings, before our evening meal.

Day 2 – Tuesday 14th May

Today we visit the Maritime Museum and Occupation Tapestry Gallery, located in the historic harbour of St Helier. This interactive museum gives a great insight into the maritime heritage of Jersey and the award-winning Occupation Tapestry; twelve panels of richly coloured tapestry made by the people of Jersey, depicting the Islanders’ personal memories of the Second World War. Our lunch stop will be at the Quayside Bistro & Grill, which overlooks the stunning Jersey Marina. After lunch we will visit the Jersey Museum and then have some free time to leisurely enjoy St Helier.

Day 3 – Wednesday 15th May

Today we will continue exploring some of the main attractions on the Island. We begin with a guided tour of La Hougue Bie, where we will discover traces of life in Jersey from Neolithic times to the German Occupation of World War II. The Neolithic passage grave is one of the 10 oldest buildings in the world (4000– 3500 BC). Following our morning visit, we will head to The Botanic Gardens of Samares Manor, which is also our lunch destination. During a guided tour of the manor, we will hear the stories of the Seigneurs throughout the ages, up to the present day. Lunch will be enjoyed in the Café on site, before some free time to explore the gardens and rural life museum. We will end our day enjoying the extravagant and colourful display of flowers at the Eric Young Orchid Centre.

Day 4 – Thursday 16th May

Our day begins with a visit to the Glass Church, also known as St Matthews. Beginning life as a modest chapel in the 1840’s, a gift by a local resident a century later changed this church into the exquisite building it is today! Rene Lalique, talented glass maker, was commissioned to decorate the building with his finest work. After our visit, we will take a short drive to our light lunch stop before a visit to The Jersey War Tunnels. Here we will have a self-led tour of the exhibition housed in the underground tunnels. A chance to find out the true story of what life was like in Jersey during the German occupation in WWII.

Day 5 – Friday 17th May

After a relaxed breakfast, porters will collect your luggage and your Tour Manager will assist with check-out. We will then board the coach for departure to Jersey Airport. On arrival at the airport, we will check in and purchase our lunch in the departure lounge. Following our flight back to London Heathrow Airport, your Tour Manager will assist at baggage reclaim. Our door to door cars will then arrive for the final part of your journey home.
