This holiday to Stratford-upon-Avon gives us the opportunity to enjoy the unique event that takes place to mark the birth of the world’s greatest playwright. The Birthday Celebrations are held on the weekend closest to Shakespeare’s birthday, April 23rd, and is a tradition going back nearly 200 years. The birthday weekend brings together performers, artists, the local community and ambassadors from around the world in a vibrant celebration of the life and works of William Shakespeare. During this two-day event, the town’s streets are filled with music, pageantry and drama through a programme of performance, and entertainment at venues and locations across the picturesque town. The ceremonial masterpiece is the grand birthday procession from the town centre to the Holy Trinity Church where flowers are laid on the grave where Shakespeare is buried.
Stratford-upon-Avon is acknowledged worldwide as the birth and resting place of William Shakespeare, with the Royal Shakespeare Company being the focal point for the production of the Bard's plays at its theatres. The aim of the RSC. is to keep modern audiences in touch with Shakespeare as if he were our contemporary. Consequently, the Royal Shakespeare Company often set his plays in modern times.
Our immersion in to all things Shakespeare, starts with a performance of ‘Henry V’ staged at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Henry V is a history play, probably written around 1599. It covers events during the Hundred Years' War, directly before and after the Battle of Agincourt (1415). After becoming king, Henry V considers making a claim to rule France as well as England. His mind was made up after receiving an insulting message from the dauphin and former companions of the king set out to join his army. Once in France the soldiers become disheartened Henry continues to prepare them to fight. An English victory is confirmed and the linking of the two countries is ensured by the marriage of Henry and Princess Katherine.
