During our Royal Opera House break we are delighted to have secured tickets for two remarkable Operas, ‘La Traviata’ and ‘Turandot’. The central location of our hotel also allows us to enjoy some other popular attractions.

‘La Traviata’ translates to ‘she who have strayed from a path’, and was based on the life and death of the real-life Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. It tells the story of a young woman who chooses to follow her heart and leave behind her life of luxury and freedom, that is until her chosen lifestyle and illness threaten her new life. The main character, Violetta Valéry, is one of Verdi’s greatest characters and has won the hearts of regular audiences, as well as being a hit with first time opera goers. The intoxicating music during this amazing opera is some of Verdi’s most inspired arias and duets.

‘Turandot’ tells the story of how a beautiful, but icy Princess chooses the man she wants to marry. Suitors who fail to correctly answer the three riddles she sets are tragically beheaded. It is a mysterious stranger who upsets her power and succeeds where others have failed! This dazzling production transports audiences to a beautiful, but brutal world through colourful sets and magnificent costumes inspired by ancient Chinese culture. ‘Turandot’ is also known as Puccini’s unfinished masterpiece, due to the great maestro dying before finishing the final act. The completion of this grand opera fell to the hands of Fredo Alfano and during its debut performance is famous for the acts of the conductor, who laid down his baton in Act III, declaring 'at this point, the Maestro died'.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Thursday 8th January

You will meet your Tour Manager at the Clermont Charing Cross Hotel, and leave our luggage with concierge, until check in later. We will visit St Paul’s Actors’ Church, a 17th century Anglican church that backs onto Covent Garden Piazza. This delightful little church has a huge number of memorials to the theatrical profession, including Dame Ellen Terry, Dame Edith Evans, Vivien Leigh and Dame Diana Rigg. There are opportunities to sit in the church and relax during the Rector’s seated talk about its 300-year history. We will enjoy lunch at the nearby St Martin in the Fields church, before enjoying a self-guided tour. St Martin in the Fields is an iconic London landmark, the current building having existed since 1726, although there has been a church in the same position since Norman times. Tonight, we will relish a performance of La Traviata at the Royal Opera House.

Day 2 – Friday 9th January

Today is all about the Royal Opera House and all it has to offer! We begin with a ‘Behind the Scenes’ experience, where we join one of their expert guides and embark on an exclusive tour of the building, accessing spaces normally off-limits to the public. We will enjoy a delightful Afternoon Tea in a nearby restaurant, followed by some free time to enjoy Covent Garden or return to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon. Our pre-theatre dining experience will be at the Balconies Restaurant in the ROH, with unrivalled views over the Paul Hamlyn Hall, renowned for the best modern, fine dining. Following our meal, we will take our seats to sit back and be marvelled by a performance of ‘Turandot’.

Day 3 – Saturday 10th January

This morning we have a guided tour of the nearby heritage gem at 36 Craven Street. Here we will find the last remaining house of Benjamin Franklin, and take a step back in time as we learn about the story behind Franklin’s time in 18th-century London. The property is spread over 5 floors only accessed by stairs. We will bring our break to an end with a 2-course farewell lunch in Cote, Covent Garden, before returning to the hotel where our door to door cars will then arrive to take us home.
